Today was an Unexpectedly Productive Day

I didn't have many expectations for today. My (to)day's plans actually started early in the morning hours of Sunday when Patrick started throwing up and took little break from doing so until 7:30 am Sunday morning. Granted Chip handled half of the incidents, but I knew that if Patrick got sick again much past that 7:30 mark, I would be at home with him today.

His daycare has a 24-hour-rule that if they have to be free and clear of a fever or vomiting or such for 24 hours before they return to school. 7:30 would have been fine. He started drinking fluids and did okay.

Until 3:00 pm.

It happened again.

So my fate was sealed. I would be calling in today to tell my boss that I would be at home with my son today because he had a virus. Of course I wanted Patrick to get well fast and not be sick today, but I also feel like I'm somehow playing hooky when I at home with a child who is acting perfectly healthy because he can't be at school. Of course with as sick as he was yesterday, I might have kept him at home at least 1/2 a day regardless of a rule to make sure that it didn't start up again after he ate today.

He made it through the night and this morning did well with breakfast.

I decided that taking him to Target for 30 minutes would be fine with as well as he was feeling. So we went and get some bins that I have been longing for to complete a project that would restore my personal sanity.

This was the source of my uneasiness:

And after a yummy grilled cheese and saltines lunch (which he is doing well with), here is what we did about it:

So I made labels with the names of a category of toys and a corresponding picture so Patrick had specific homes for each of his toys in the evenings. He knows exactly where to look for things as well. He and I spent about 1-1/2 hours compiling his toys into these bins (it took that long mostly because I wanted him to do a lot of the work). Thankfully he is a great little helper. So we spent $22 (plus tax) on the bin drawers at Target (on sale for $11 a piece). We already had the bookshelf/bin set up. And with a little bit of time and a little printer ink, my world is now much more at peace.

The Thomas set actually has a home too in one of those bins, but I didn't want to break it down only to reassemble it tonight. Yeah, Mommy was lazy.

He is currently napping and I think I'll go do the same. =)

By the way...for my readers in multiple locations, I'm duplicating this post at Riding Bicycles due to its mommy-ness. =)

Friday Faves - Schultz Philosophy

Schultz Philosophy

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of the 'Peanuts' comic strip. You don't have to actually answer the questions. Just read the post straight through, and you'll get the point.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of Miss America.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier?

The lesson:

The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.

"Don't worry about the world coming to an end today.
It's already tomorrow in Australia "
--Charles Schultz
