High Value Coupons!

If you're visiting via The 5th Edition of the Carnival of Savings over at Savings with Sadie, WELCOME! Please feel free to stick around and browse. You can always subscribe to my feed right below my header! Thanks again for the visit!

Everyone likes a good deal. Many of us use coupons to really save on our groceries. Unfortunately, there are many times that I can't find any coupons for what I need or the brands that I like! What to do?!

The solution:

Write the manufacturer of the products you like. Explain to them why you like it or how you use it to better your life. Explain a fun story of when that product was used. Just make it personal and look less like a form letter. Most companies will appreciate your feedback and send you freebies and/or coupons! Just like that, you have coupons for things you like and need--and often higher value coupons than those you can find online or in the newspaper!

What makes this better? The ease of this process now! Now that all companies (that you would be writing) will have a website, you can simply go to their "contact us" page. From there you can simply email them your information. Be sure to include your full name and home address even if their form does not ask for it.

See that huge collection of coupons? Those are the coupons that I have received in ONE WEEK! There are also freebies in there as well! I only emailed about 10 companies, and I haven't even received all of the ones that I've been promised via email!

Here's the breakdown:

That's a total of $169.35 in coupons alone! I am also promised coupons from several other companies. I need to get busy writing some more to rack up more free stuff!
A special thanks needs to go out to Couponing to Disney who gave me this idea. She lists 5 companies each day to write in her posts entitled "5 A Day." She also has a "4 A Day" that lists samples you can request...many of which also come with coupons!

This has SERIOUSLY started working for me! I hope it works for you too! Go over to We Are THAT Family to see what works for others!

Weekend Round Up

Once upon at this blog, I would do a weekly round up on Saturday as a review of my favorite posts of the week. Then I stopped that feature. Then I stopped blogging. Then I returned to blogging. Now I am reintroducing the Round Up. It's basically to direct my readers to some posts that I found informative, funny, interesting, or thoughtful. Whatever I liked that week, that's what I share. It also gives some of my fellow bloggers some link love because we all appreciate the traffic. =)

This new version of the round up though will also introduce you to one of my new favorite sites. There are so many that I frequent...however, there are still so many more good ones out there.

I will also feature a picture of something round. Or circular. Because I'm clever like that.

Less talk...more linkage.

Family/Home:
Frugality:
Faith:
Fun:
Favorite New Site of the Week:
  • People of Walmart. Not all photos are "family friendly," but obviously all are something you could encounter at Walmart, so I'm not introducing you to anything that you couldn't see in public. I shudder at that thought. You'll understand when you click through.

Friday Faves - Half Boy, Half Man

Sent to me in an email. We can't forget about soldiers still at work...

The average age of the military man is 19 years. He is a short haired, tight-muscled kid who, under normal circumstances is considered by society as half man, half boy. Not yet dry behind the ears, not old enough to buy a beer, but old enough to die for his country. He never really cared much for work and he would rather wax his own car than wash his father's, but he has never collected unemployment either.

He's a recent High School graduate; he was probably an average student, pursued some form of sport activities, drives a ten year old jalopy, and has a steady girlfriend that either broke up with him when he left, or swears to be waiting when he returns from half a world away. He listens to rock and roll or hip-hop or rap or jazz or swing and a 155mm howitzer.

He is 10 or 15 pounds lighter now than when he was at home because he is working or fighting from before dawn to well after dusk. He has trouble spelling, thus letter writing is a pain for him, but he can field strip a rifle in 30 seconds and reassemble it in less time in the dark. He can recite to you the nomenclature of a machine gun or grenade launcher and use either one effectively if he must.

He digs foxholes and latrines and can apply first aid like a professional.

He can march until he is told to stop, or stop until he is told to march.

He obeys orders instantly and without hesitation, but he is not without spirit or individual dignity. He is self-sufficient.

He has two sets of fatigues: he washes one and wears the other. He keeps his canteens full and his feet dry.

He sometimes forgets to brush his teeth, but never to clean his rifle. He can cook his own meals, mend his own clothes, and fix his own hurts.

If you're thirsty, he'll share his water with you; if you are hungry, his food. He'll even split his ammunition with you in the midst of battle when you run low.

He has learned to use his hands like weapons and weapons like they were his hands.

He can save your life - or take it, because that is his job.

He will often do twice the work of a civilian, draw half the pay, and still find ironic humor in it all.

He has seen more suffering and death than he should have in his short lifetime.

He has wept in public and in private, for friends who have fallen in combat and is unashamed.

He feels every note of the National Anthem vibrate through his body while at rigid attention, while tempering the burning desire to 'square-away ' those around him who haven't bothered to stand, remove their hat, or even stop talking. In an odd twist, day in and day out, far from home, he defends their right to be disrespectful.

Just as did his Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather, he is paying the price for our freedom. Beardless or not, he is not a boy. He is the American Fighting Man that has kept this country free for over 200 years.

He has asked nothing in return, except our friendship and understanding. Remember him, always, for he has earned our respect and admiration with his blood.

And now we even have women in danger, doing their part in this tradition of going to War when our nation calls us to do so.

As you go to bed tonight, remember this shot. . .

A short lull, a little shade and a picture of loved ones in their helmets.

'Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Amen.'

Of all the gifts you could give a US Soldier, Sailor, Coast Guardsman, Marine, or Airman, prayer is the very best one.

The Children's Place Fall Sale Still On!

So right now you can really rack up at The Children's Place with their fall sale. You can get fall/winter clothes as well as some summer clearance items for great prices. These are good quality clothes that are adorable as well as durable! They resell really well too, so they are great for future consignment sales or ebay listings!

Today I received a shipment that I ordered last week of clothes for both Patrick and Abigail for this fall/winter as well as next summer. I got a total of 27 items for $145.74 shipped (it was $131.16 plus $5.00 shipping and $9.58 in tax). So that is $5.40 per item! That's just as good as some consignment pieces and this stuff is BRAND NEW and GOOD QUALITY!

I would provide a photo, but I've already put some of it away and since I'm actually typing this on Wednesday night, I'm not about to risk waking the kids up to get clothes out of their closets for photos!

Some ways I kept my cost down:
  • Ordering some matchable items--they are marked down to only $0.99 each. These will make great summer play clothes, beach clothes, and pool clothes.
  • Buying ONLY fall sale items--they are currently marked down an additional 25%
  • Counting on their $5.00 flat shipping rate--of course you only get your money's worth if you order a lot like I did
  • Using code NEXTJ78 to get 10% off my order. However, I just found a new code, released 09/19/09, that is supposed to be good for 15% off through Sept 26th. Try V4989, as it seems to be working for others!

So this seems to be a great time to get good discounts on clothes you can rely on to last and resell well!

Go get 'em!

It's Like BOGO - Halloween Style!

Now that Halloween is just around the corner, it seems that I need to get on board with getting my son all costumed-up. I know that they are frugal ways to do costumes…you know, make them yourself or put them together from less expensive items. However, we fell into the trap of adorable retailed costumes from his second Halloween (his first he was not even a month old, so no dressing up for him). Now we can’t seem to go for anything “less.”

Call it what you want, but it is where we are now.

So how can I reduce the madness? Easy….

His costume two years ago was that of an astronaut. It was ADORABLE both on the rack and on him. He wore it once to our church’s fall festival and therefore it is in PERFECT condition. That’s right…not near perfect, but honestly flawless.

So this year I decided that, like the rest of his toddler clothes, it had to go. This one didn’t go to consignment though because I felt I could get more for it on ebay. Boy was I right! It closed last night for $24.50! WOWSER! That’s more than the $19.99 for the cost of the one he wants this year, so we will be using this money to buy this year’s costume. Hooray! It’s like buying one costume and getting more than one year out of it! Maybe this year’s costume will still be popular next year and we can resell it. That is, if we can keep it in good condition (I have a feeling he might want to keep this one for “dress up” purposes).

At least for this year (and hopefully years to come), using the funds from sold previous costumes to buy this year’s costume worked for me! Go to We Are THAT Family to see what else works!

After Rebates, I Saved 90%

Everything in this picture should total $67.37, but was purchased for $16.61 out of pocket and I'm due back $11.00 in rebates. Let's do a breakdown to see how this happened!

RITE AID:
3 Huggies Pure & Natural Jumbo Pack: retail $11.99 each; sale 3/$33; used -$3 Huggies Pure & Natural coupon (qty 2); used free diaper coupon (Rite Aid offer from August rebate book); used -$2 Rite Aid Ad Perk coupons (qty 3); I paid $10.00 *note: the adperk coupons say "one per customer," which I didn't realize until I got to the store and the cashier pointed it out. The manager looked at it and said she'd take all three...check with your store first to be sure this will work for you. At worst, you can use one of them and get them all for $14...still not bad.
2 Huggies Wipes: retail $3.49 each; sale 2/$5; used -$2 coupons (qty 2); I paid $0.50 each
Also used $5/$25 purchase coupon
Original Price: $40.31
Paid: $8.31 out of pocket
Saved 79.38% with coupons
Rite Aid Single Check Rebates due: $11 ($10 for diapers and $1 for wipes)
Saved 107% (or made $2.69 in overage)

CVS:
Transaction #1:
2 Wheat Thins (small box): reg $1.89; sale 5/$5; used -$1 coupon (qty 2); I paid $0.00
1 Colgate Classic Toothbrush (trial size aisle): reg $0.99; I paid $0.99
Retail: $4.77
I Paid: $1.12
Saved 76.5%
ECB Earned: 1 (toothbrush)
Transaction #2:
2 Dry Idea deodorants: reg $4.99; sale $2.99; used -$2 coupons no longer available to print(qty 2); I paid $0.99 each ($1.98 total)
Used 2 ECBs (marked down to 1.98) that I already had

Retail: $9.98
I Paid: $0.42
Saved 95.8%
ECB Earned: 2 (1 per deodorant)

Transaction #3:
1 Lansinoh breast milk storage bags, 50 count: reg $10.99; sale N/A; I paid $10.99

Used 5 ECBs - Used 2 that I already had and 3 from above two transactions
Retail: $10.99
I Paid: $6.76
Saved 38.5%
ECB Earned: 0
So you can see that my first two CVS deals were just to get (basically) free stuff and collect ECBs and then I used them to buy something that I actually really needed and got ALL of it for less than the retail price of the bags in the first place! =)
Hooray!

Flu Shots for Free!

NOTE: This entire post is in regards to seasonal flu, not the H1N1 virus!

It seems that some of the big-name chain pharmacies are trying to help people out who are dealing with difficult times. They are concerned with the threat of an upcoming all-out flu epidemic that many people will not get flu shots because they cannot afford it due to either lack of insurance or lack of employment.

What is one to do?

Well, get a flu shot anyway! How?

Walgreen’s
According to Walgreen’s website, they are “distributing up to $1 million worth of flu shots to those without insurance across the country!” How do you get in on that action? You must visit a wellness bus while it is on tour across the country between September 17th (today!) and November 15, 2009 to get a voucher for a free shot, which is good at any Walgreens pharmacy or Take Care Clinic through November 30, 2009. Good for uninsured patients 18 and older.

What is this bus tour thing? It is a Wellness Tour sponsored by Walgreen’s and AARP to run various health screenings that value $140.00 for FREE! So not only do you get a free flu shot voucher, but you can have your health checked out for free hwile you are there. Click here to find a stop near you.

CVS
According to their website, CVS Caremark will be provided free flu shots (up to $3 million worth) to the unemployed who cannot afford a clinic visit and/or do not have an employer who is giving away free shots. So 100,000 unemployed people will be able to protect their health and well being with this program!

These will be distributed in the form of a voucher as well which can be picked up at One-Stop Career Centers across the country beginning in October. Click here to find out more information and to check updates on the status of the schedules.

In addition to these retailers, you may qualify for a free flu shot if you participate in Medicare Part B. Among others offering free seasonal flu shots: county health departments (contact yours to find out if/when/where), college medical clinics, and employers (companies and government).
See if you can get your hands on one. If you don’t, it might be worth the $25 cost to save trips to the doctor as well as time spent feeling quite lousy!

Walgreen's Clearance!!

Blogger FINALLY let me online to tell you about the awesome deals I got yesterday!

I went to Walgreen's to do my usual coupon-extravaganza filled run. While there I happened to take the cleaner aisle to get from the back of the store to the front. Well, aren't I glad I did?!

Walgreen's has a WHOLE LOTTA' cleaners on clearance for some reason. Luckily I had all of my coupons in the store with me, so I was able to get the following:

Pledge Orange Oil Spray: marked down to $1.39; With my -$1 coupon, I paid $0.39!
Scrubbing Bubbles Flushable Cleaning Wipes: marked down to $1.09; With my -$1 coupon, I paid $0.09!
Glade candle refills: marked down to $0.95; with my -$1 coupon, I got $0.05 OVERAGE
Air Wick Room Sprays (qty 2): marked down to $0.75 ea; with my -$1 coupons (qty 2); I got both and $0.50 OVERAGE!

Also, the Spearmint Mentos were on clearance for $0.42. Although I don't normally chew gum, it wouldn't hurt me to have some onhand for breath emergencies. =) I used my -$0.55 coupon and they had to mark this one down to -$0.42, so I got it free!

There were other things that I would have gotten for seriously cheap or free if they weren't already gone! Must remember to go earlier in the week!

Hurry up and check out your store! I don't know how long this will be going on, but you can clean your house for super cheap if you score!

ARRRRR!

It's International Talk Like a Pirate Day!

If you're a twitterer? tweeter? Whatever....IF YOU USE TWITTER, you can use this nifty tool to tweet like a pirate!

If you use Facebook, you can change your official language to Pirate (link says "English" (probably) at the bottom of the page--click on that for choices and you'll see that "Pirate" is one of the choice).

If you don't do either, you can still participate!

Friday Faves - Random Facts

Passed along to me in an email. I don't know if it is ALL true, but none of it is illogical and it is all interesting. Enjoy!

  • 'Stewardesses' is the longest word typed with only the left hand.
  • And 'lollipop' is the longest word typed with your right hand. (Bet you tried this out mentally, didn't you?)
  • No word in the English language rhymes with month, orange, silver, or purple.
  • 'Dreamt' is the only English word that ends in the letters 'mt'.

Bargains at BJ's

I will be honest about this one...this post is written entirely because I was approached about writing it. But I will be totally honest in my review of the material I was given!

I have long owned a membership to our local wholesale club. It's great for stocking up on items that are non-perishable or toiletries or such if they are not to be had on sale at any of my local shopping stomping grounds. I do use it whenever it is needed.

What I don't have is a membership to a wholesale club that takes coupons. In fact, I assumed none of them did since my only experiences did not allow them.

BJ's on the other hand is obviously a horse of a different color (who caught the Wizard of Oz reference there?). It seems that not only does BJ's offer their own store coupons, but they take manufacturer's coupons as well! And there's even a bonus...they take one coupon per ITEM. The example given to me was that if you have a 5-pack of toothpaste, you can use FIVE manufacturer coupons on that item for multiplied savings! That's simply incredible!

WFMW - Pharmacy Tracking

Today's Works for Me Wednesday is something that I have shared in the past, but I have decided to post again for a number of reasons:

  1. Not all of you were reading when I first posted it
  2. It has been changed to accommodate various shopping situations as my needs changed
  3. Rite Aid has been added to this project
So what is it, you ask? Well, this is my Pharmacy Tracking Sheet which I created to assist me in figuring out how to split up purchases when shopping at CVS, Walgreens & Rite Aid in order to get my best deal. It started out as a means to shuffle around purchases from one transaction to another to figure out how to save money best. Now I even print it up and take it with me into the store to make sure I get it right. =)
How do you use it? Well, I will tell you
  • Save a copy of it for yourself.
  • Choose pharmacy tab at the bottom that you'd like to use
  • Fill in pink areas as required. Note: The pink areas between the two yellow cells on the right are for how many ECBs, RRs, or SC Rebates you spent on that transaction. Also note...on the coupon amounts, you have to fill in the total amounts for all coupons you have for that item. That way you can use different coupons or varying value without confusing the spreadsheet.
  • See the totals calculate themselves for you at the bottom
  • Shuffle items around from one transaction to another to see if you can rearrange the order to get better savings.
I personally think it is otherwise straightforward, but please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about it or visit the older post for directions.
Want to see a sample of mine? Here you go (click to enlarge):

Compare the plan to this post and you'll see that it works! I really did save $99.66% after rebates! You can see other victories using earlier revisions of this sheet here, here, here, here and here.
So that is how I plan my trips to save LOSTA money at pharmacies. It works for me and might work for you too! Visit We Are THAT Family for more Works for Me Wednesday tips from across the internet!

Tuesday Free For All - It's Back...Again!

I apologize that this post is going up so late in the day. Blogger was being difficult and I JUST got here to post!

So...believe it or not, I'm back with Tuesday Free for All! Yes, it's been a LONG time, but I'm trying to get back into the swing of things in the blogging world and thought...what better way to work my way back in than to share lots of good freebies and chances to win stuff?!

Why do I do this? Well, I love me some samples. No, I don't order every sample I come across. I just personally order those of products that I either already use and like or those that I have never tried but would use if I liked...or just samples of things that are too expensive or unpractical for me to buy the full size. Sample toiletries are great in our guest bathroom when we have guests. I also often take them when we travel to save room in the suitcase. And with a new baby in the house, I'll take ANY baby freebies...diapers, formula, wipes, rash cream...anything to save a penny here for there, for they WILL get used! And the great thing is, many of these samples come with high dollar value coupons included from the manufacturer. So maybe I don't need one tiny diaper, but 1.) it will get used and 2.) I'll likely get a great coupon to use with it! Score TWICE!

And the sweepstakes...are they worth entering? Well, SOMEONE has to win, right? If you enter often enough, odds of winning something increases, right? In the past I have won (from entering online sweepstakes) two months of free rent (in college), a FURminator, and just recently a gas card worth $100! Hooray!

But you didn't come here to read what I wrote (at least not today). You came here for the freebies...so without further ado:
