Friday Faves - Tampons & Marines

I was sent this email by a friend and not only is a heart-warming and humorous story, but a story of great resourcefulness. Therefore, I just had to share. I have no idea if it is true, but it is certainly plausible. Enjoy!


My son told me how wonderful the care packages we had sent them from the ladies auxiliary were and wanted me to tell everyone thank you. He said that one guy we'll call Marine X, got a female care package and everyone was giving him a hard time. My son said, 'Marine X got some really nice smelling lotion and everyone really likes it, so everytime he goes to sleep they steal it from him.' I told my son I was reallysorry about the mistake, and if he wanted I would send Marine X another package. He told me not to worry about Marine X because every time I sendsomething to him, he shares it with Marine X. He said when my husband and I sent the last care package, Marine X came over to his cot picked up the box, started fishing through it, and said, 'What'd we get this time?'

But my son said they had the most fun with Marine X's package. He said he wasn't sure who it was supposed to go to, but the panties were size 20, and he said one of the guys got on top of the Humvee and jumped off with the panties over his head and yelled, 'Look at me, I'm an Airborne Ranger!!!!' One of the guys attached the panties to an antenna and it blew in the wind like a windsock. He said it entertained them for quite awhile. Then of course.......they had those tampons.

When he brought this up, my imagination just went running, but he continued. My son said they had to go on a mission and Marine X wanted the Chap-Stick and lotion for the trip. He grabbed a bunch of the items from his care package and got in the Humvee. As luck would have it he grabbed the tampons too, and my son said everyone was teasing him about 'not forgetting his feminine hygiene products.'

He said things went well for a while, then the convoy was ambushed and a Marine was shot. He said the wound was pretty clean, but it was deep. He said they were administering first aid but couldn't get the bleeding to slow down, and someone said, 'Hey! Use Marine X's tampons!' My son said they put the tampon in the wound. At this point my son profoundly told Me, 'Mom, did you know that tampons expand?' ('Well....yeah!')

They successfully slowed the bleeding until the guy got better medical attention. When they went to check on him later, the surgeon told them, 'You guys saved his life. If you hadn't stopped that bleeding he would have bled to death.' My Son said, 'Mom, the tampons sent by the Marine Moms by mistake saved a Marine's life.'

At this point I asked him, 'Well, what did you do with the rest of the tampons?' He said, 'Oh, we divided them up and we all have them in our flak jackets, and I kept two for our first aid kit.'

I am absolutely amazed by the ingenuity of our Marines. I can't believe that something that started out as a mistake then turned into a joke, ended up saving someone's life. My sister said she doesn't believe in mistakes. She believes God had a plan all along. She believes that 'female care package' was sent to Marine X to save our Marine. Either way, our efforts have boosted the morale of many Marines, provided much needed items for our troops, AND saved the life of a Marine! God bless every one of you for your efforts and hard work, and God bless our Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force and all our military servicepersonnel.

Back to School Blowout - It's Back!

Back to School is a big deal. A really big deal.

I am learning this more and more and Patrick gets older. He is starting kindergarten this year and I am quickly learning that this is a much bigger deal than Pre-K was!

So in honor of our little guy's first year of "real" school, I am hosting a mega Back to School Blowout giveaway extravaganza. If you were around for the one last year, you'll remember what a blowout it was. I hope you all join in on the fun and make this one even bigger than last year!

I thought it would be cool and fun to offer prizes that both help in making going back to school easier for the kids, on the wallet, and for the parents.

What Can Harry Potter Teach Us About Money?

Here on the eve of the release of one of the most highly anticipated movies of a series (a 10-year series, might I add), I wanted to examine what in the world that The Boy Who Lived and his friends can teach us about money.

A stretch? Maybe. But it should at least be fun.

By the way...this post containers no direct spoilers (I'm not going to ruin the last movie for you), but does contain information that indicates some plot lines. If you are avoiding information about the series because you want to discover it yourself, I would suggest reading this some other time.

Smart People Avoid Spending Sprees

One of the most surprising parts of this series is Harry’s management of the fortune he discovered he had at 11 years old. What kid at 11 understands that the money will not last forever – especially when discovering that a bank vault full of gold is his alone? Obviously Harry did. Although an unrealistic maturity for a tween, this act indicates that Harry is smarter than the average kid.

Money Does Not Prevent Trouble in Life

Sure, money can buy you out of sticky situations, but it seems that those types of situations never really go away until the problem is truly solved. Regardless of Harry’s fortune, he was tracked for 7 years by Voldemort and no amount of money would have bought safety for him, his friends or his family. He had to address that one head on.

Money Does Not Buy Happiness

The best (and most obvious) example of this is the large and fun Weasley family. With seven children, a stay at home mom and a dad who has a job with a mediocre paygrade, this family could have easily found themselves feeling destitute and complaining. Although Ron did his share of complaining about lack of money that would be typical for a kid his age, the Weasley family as a whole was content. They had large gatherings with family and friends and always, even through horrible times, had an optimistic view of life.

Wealth is Not An Indication of Character

Draco Malfoy was raised in wealth and splendor and could have bought anything the world had to offer, but none of the money his family had could provide him with the character and courage it took to do what was right. In fact, throughout all 7 books he proves to be nothing but a loud mouthed coward unable to save or think for himself.

You Are Not Defined by Your Upbringing

This can be seen in a number of instances. Harry was one of the best wizards the world had ever seen but was raised in an emotional and psychologically abusive situation where his guardians did nothing but berate him. He excelled anyway.

Voldemort grew up in an orphanage with no knowledge of his family for a long time. Although he chose an evil path in life, there is no doubt that he because one of the most powerful of his kind in history.

Sirius Black was raised in a snooty, pureblood family who had evil tendencies, but he turned out quite down to earth and shook off the notion of superiority.

And getting back to finances: Fred and George Weasley became quite successful businessmen who could afford lavish items despite their humble childhood.

Hard Work Pays Off

Despite her Muggle upbringing, Hermione Granger was one of the most thoroughly read and informed witches that Hogwarts had ever seen. She did not learn magic from her family, as many of the students had (and had taken for granted) but studied hard to become great. Late nights of studying, obsessive reading, and taking huge course loads of classes along with her desire to learn made her one of Harry’s most valuable assets.

Side Hustle

Fred and George spent most of their time at Hogwarts creating new tricks and pranks, doing market research by the way of paying underclassmen to let them experiment on, and selling items on the side. This would eventually lead to them doing what they truly loved.

Gambling is Not a Good Source of Income

During the 4th book we see crowds of people heading to the Quidditch World Cup. During the festivities, the Weasley twins bet on the outcome of the games using their life savings. Although they predict the end of the game perfectly, they are never paid their winnings, as the swindler of a “bookie” chastises them for being too young to gamble and refuses to pay out.

Giving Lifts Your Spirits

After the TriWizard tournament was over and Harry had been awarded the prize of 1000 Galleons, he did not feel right about taking it. He tried to offer it to Cedric’s parents, but they refused it. So he ended up giving it to the Weasley twins to use for their business venture. Later, when Harry saw how that investment had helped then (and yes, they did thank him for it), he felt good about giving it to them to help them out.

You Can’t Take it With You

The final war between good and evil leaves a wake of carnage behind. In the end young and old, rich and poor, wise and foolish – so many don’t make it out alive. All of the wealth in this world could not save them from the certainty of death. Make sure the legacy you leave behind is more than a bank account balance.

Extreme Coupon Show Backlash as Stores Change Policies (Guest Post)

A recent article on The Consumerist found the TLC show, Extreme Couponing, has sparked a trend of out-of-control couponers who ransack stores with little regard for fellow shoppers. Merchants have taken notice and many major retailers are starting to change their policies. Here are some of the big ones.

Rite Aid
Rite Aid has taken the same steps as Target to crack down on shoppers looking to exploit BOGO coupon offers. The drug store chain has also made other changes including limiting the number of coupons per item to four. If inventory is running low, managers may limit the numbers further.

Target
The biggest change at Target comes to their buy one, get one (BOGO) policy. They now only allow one BOGO coupon per purchase. Previously, customers could "stack" Target printable coupons, combining store and manufacturer BOGO coupons to get both items for free.

Walgreens
Many high tech shoppers have even started to crack coupon barcodes, allowing them to use coupons on products they're not intended for. Walgreens is working to combat this fraud by adopting a new type of barcode. New barcodes will be able to hold more data and can better make sure Walgreens coupons are used for the right product.

Publix
At Publix stores throughout the country they're also limiting the number of coupons that can be used on one product. Their new policy limits couponers to one manufacturers coupon and one store coupon per item.

Shopping with coupons is certainly a smart way to save, but there are right and wrong ways to do it. Here are some basic do's and dont's to help you coupon with class.

DO play by the rules. Couponing isn't too complicated and common sense should get you by in most cases. Rules vary store to store, so if you're planning to use a large amount of coupons, it helps to brush up on coupon policies before you shop. This includes making sure you're buying the item the coupon is intended for and checking to see if they'll accept expired coupons or not.

DON'T clear the shelf. In the eyes of casual shoppers, clearing entire shelves of popular sale items crosses the line between couponing and hoarding. If you really want to stock up on certain products, try making multiple trips or call ahead and ask a manager if they'll set aside an order for you.

DO be organized before you check out. It's a nightmare for cashiers and people waiting in line when you hand over a haphazard pile of miscellaneous coupons. It'll be much appreciated if you clip them before hand and make sure they're all facing the same direction. Also, remember to remove coupons for products you didn't end up buying. If you are using mobile coupons, have them ready on your smartphone for the cashier to scan.

DON'T shop during the busiest times. The stress level of those waiting in line during peak times is high enough. Using dozens of coupons takes time and will only irritate other shoppers. Instead, go shopping when business is slow. It takes the pressure off to complete the transaction as quickly as possible for both you and the cashier.

DO be polite to the cashier and fellow customers. Sure, you might have some knowledge other customers and even clerks don't, but it's no excuse to treat others like they're beneath you. If a cashier isn't familiar with coupon policies, stay calm and ask to speak with a supervisor. They're much more helpful if you don't lose your cool. When your cart is overflowing, give those behind you a heads up that you'll be using coupons. If someone is waiting with just a loaf of bread and gallon of milk, let them cut ahead.

DON'T steal coupons! A growing trend turning the tide against couponers is theft. Newspapers and newspaper subscribers are increasingly finding coupon inserts stolen. This is a big no-no and can get you into some serious trouble. Many people will willingly part with their unused inserts if you ask nicely.

Surrounded by Names!

Have you ever noticed a concentration of people by a certain name in a particular area. I'm not talking about people with the same last name who are all related to one another.

I mean people with the same first name.

Before we lived in Mississippi I had never met a person named Lamar. Sure I knew of the name, but had never actually met anyone with the name. Within the first year of living there I knew of 4. It was weird.

The same thing happened when we moved to Savannah with the name Larry. I had previously known 2 other Larrys in my 27 years. I started to work with 3 Larrys in our facility of only 120 employees. Only two still work here, but in my everyday work life, I frequently work with contractors and vendors and regularly deal with 4 others. I have worked with 2 others on one particular project in the past.

That's 9 Larrys people.

And it's not that I get out and meet everyone in this city. Seriously...this is everyday life.

Love Drop - Month 7 - Felicity

The Love Drop for June was incredible as the Aubin family was showered with gifts of money to cover their rent for 3 months, a dedicated park bench in memory of Keith, lots of gifts and 84 new organ donors!

Moving into July the Love Drop team wants to help out 4-year old Felicity and her family. Felicity lives in the Atlanta area and was just diagnosed with brain cancer. Surgery removed a large portion of it and she is presently undergoing radiation therapy to hopefully take care of the rest. If you've ever had a friend of family member go through anything similar, you know how taxing this whole ordeal can be emotionally, psychologically, spiritually, and financially.

The Love Drop team is stepping in to hopefully help as much as possible. You can join in. The team wants to raise $5000 to help with medical expenses as well as the cost of another little one who is on the way. There is a $25 donate button available on the homepage for an easy means of giving, but any amount of money you could donate would be welcome.

Other than money, any gifts or service you or someone you know could offer would be appreciated as well. If anyone could swing it (or part of it), their *dream* gift would be a new bedroom suite with a king-size bed.

What can you do?

Our Family - Unplugged

So we had a wonderful three-day weekend. We went to a first-birthday party of a neighbor, spent time at the community pool, watched movies, grilled out, played outside, and colored inside, among other things.

What did we not do?

Well, since the internet went out sometime Friday evening for the entire community (and is still out), I haven't checked my personal email, my Facebook page, wasted time online or even blogged. In fact, the interent still isn't up as I write this on Tuesday afternoon from work (during my break, mind you).

Additionally, our TV went out on Sunday afternoon. The dish connection, this is. So we watched some DVDs that have been collecting dust on the shelf, rented a couple of new ones for $1 each (for when it was too hot to go outside), and enjoyed the silence.

Yesterday was the kids' first day at home with Chip (no more daycare until further notice). What did they do? They went to the library, played at the park, and enjoyed time together.

Lots of children's laughter has occurred and has been noticed more in the last few days because we haven't been filling our lives with other noise.

What would you do with a few days of diminished technology offerings?

REGGIE by Reggie Dabbs and John Driver - Review

The publisher's description:

My thoughts:
This is an inspirational story and very, very real. I applaud the honesty and straight-to-the-point attitude that Reggie takes on in his talks with high school students and in this book. It's a refreshing breath of honesty regarding a topic that many people would be reluctant to talk about. But Reggie wants to change the world, and he is reaching thousands in that quest.

Personally it was a great story, but did not really hit home to me. Maybe it is because my life has not lead me to be in the place that many of Reggie's target audience have found themselves. I think he is doing a great work. Although he did not truly "reach" me, I am certain that his story is reaching so many others and I think that is incredible. I pray that his story will continue to lead young people onto paths that will lead them to success.

Summary:
A great story for youth - especially those that seem to be floundering or in need of a bit of direction (and honestly...what teenager doesn't need a bit of direction?!). I would recommend this for those who work with troubled youth or young men as well. All I have to say is, Preach on, Reggie and may God bless your work.

Happy Independence Day!

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. No, Freedom Isn't Free

I watched the flag pass by one day.
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.


I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mothers' tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.


I heard the sound of taps one night,
When everything was still
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That taps had meant "Amen,"
When a flag had draped a coffin
Of a brother or a friend.


I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free.
